Honoured to collaborate with the loan of a painting by Luis Fernández

“The Fundación María Cristina Masaveu presents a major retrospective exhibition devoted to the Asturian artist Luis Fernández (Oviedo, 1900–Paris, 1973), organised jointly with the Museo de Bellas Artes de Asturias and curated by its director, Alfonso Palacio.

Luis Fernández is one of the foremost exponents of the avant-garde in Asturias and one of the most important Spanish artists of the twentieth century. His stay in Paris from 1924 onwards, he was able to meet the cream of the international avant-garde. This allowed him to become familiar with and deepen his knowledge of some of the most important art movements of the time, such as surrealism and cubism. In the 1950s the Asturian artist entered his mature period, characterised by a particular and highly personal style of figuration that was completely alien to the main artistic tendencies of the day.

The exhibition, which will commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the artist’s death, bring together one hundred and fifty works from a vast number of collections from all over the world. It will also constitute the first major retrospective devoted to one of the most unique artists of the first half of the twentieth century.

On its conclusion at the Foundation’s Madrid headquarters, the show will travel to the Museo de Bellas Artes de Asturias, opening to the public in February 2024.

The Fundación María Cristina Masaveu Peterson and the Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias would like to thank all the lenders for their generosity in lending their works for this project. Among them, the artist’s family on the one hand and the Telefónica Foundation on the other, the latter with the loan of 19 works, and a pioneering institution in the recovery of the artist in our country at the end of the last century, have been particularly relevant”.
