image description

The exhibition will consist of some twenty seven bronze sculptures that Apel·les Fenosa (1899-1988) made in the 1940s, 50s and 60s. The selection presents a comprehensive overview of Fenosa’s mature style, marked by an expressionism that sought to achieve a balance between modernity and classicism, while retaining an unwavering connection with nature. The exhibition opens with a portrait bust that the sculptor made of the poet-painter Henri Michaux in 1949. Fenosa was a close friend of Michaux’s, as well as of many other poets, and this exhibition is intended to pay tribute to their friendship. One of the most compelling exhibits is Maquette for Monument aux Martyrs d’Oradour-sur-Glane, a piece with an extraordinary history that the sculptor made in 1944 in honour of the victims massacred by the Nazi army in Oradour-sur-Glane on 10 June 1944.
