Biography
Madrid, october 31st 1929 – Rascafría (Madrid), February 7th 2021
Luis Feito was born in Madrid on October 31, 1929. At the age of 21 he entered the San Fernando School of Fine Arts. During this period of studies, his painting quickly evolved towards abstraction. In 1956, upon completing his studies, he went to Paris to live. However, he continues to have frequent contact with the Spanish artistic world and participates in the founding of the group “El Paso”. Like other informalists in the group, Feito begins to use matter in his works as another way to break with tradition, but unlike many of them, Feito’s matter does not construct an end in itself, instead matter is at the exclusive service of a fundamental element for him: color. At the end of the seventies, the artist went through some years of intense rethinking and radical rupture in his life. He settled in Montreal in 1981, from where he moved to New York in 1983. He abandoned oil painting for acrylic and progressively introduced geometry into his work. He obtained the distinction of Official of Arts and Letters of France in 1985, Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters of France in 1993, the Gold Medal of Fine Arts in 1998. He was also elected member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando (Madrid). He died in Rascafría due to the effects of Covid-19 on February 7, 2021.
