Biography
Jaume Plensa (born Barcelona, 1955) studied at the Escola de la Llotja and the Escola Superior de Belles Arts in Barcelona. Since the 1980s, he has lived and worked in cities such as Berlin, Brussels, England, France, the United States, and Barcelona. One of the most internationally renowned sculptors of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, his work focuses on the human figure, where matter and language converge. In the early stages of his career, his sculptures were anthropomorphic and expressionistic, but over time they became more refined, incorporating geometries and architectures that brought his work closer to literature. His sculptures, often dematerialised, explore the absence of the human body and human vulnerability, using materials such as iron, aluminium, and glass, and later, light, sound, and language. Plensa has exhibited in major art spaces around the world, including the Joan Miró Foundation (1996), the Reina Sofía Museum (2000), and the Venice Biennale (2015), among many others. He has also worked on theatre and opera projects, particularly with the Catalan company La Fura dels Baus. His works can be seen permanently in public spaces in various cities worldwide.
