Eduardo Chillida (San Sebastián, 1924 – 2002) was an important Basque sculptor. His first sculptures were figurative. At the end of the 40 and beginning of the 50s, he abandons nature’s imitation and concentrates himself on investigating the use of volumes into space resulting in a totally abstract Works. The materials he used most were iron and alabaster. In 1981 he received the Medalla de Oro al Mérito de las Bellas Artes by the Spanish government, and in 1987 the Premio Príncipe de Asturias de las Artes.
